Problem
[edit]We have a bit of a problem here. As you can see, the name of the article is Yar's Revenge. However, the name of the game is Yars' Revenge. Yes, that's correct, the apostrophe goes AFTER the letter 's'. I did a little bit of research and found that on all releases of the game, including the gameboy version, the apostrophe does come after the the 's'. However, if you read the game manual, you will find that the hero of the story is named simply Yar, not Yars. So therefore the title is spelled incorrectly.
So we must make a choice. Should the article title remain the grammatically correct Yar's Revenge, or should with use the original, incorrect spellin, Yars' Revenge? Please take the opportunity to vote here, and if you can please explain the reason for your choice. Thank you. - Dan Mazurowski
There is just a misunderstanding. The character in the game isn't named Yar, he is a Yar. If you read the back of the box this is made clear. -Nydigovoth
No problem. Its a species. One Yar, two Yars. One Yar would have a personal "Yar's Revenge". But the player represents the species, so it is indeed gramatically correct to say "Yars' Revenge"
- Grammatical Yar Scout. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.69.12.130 (talk) 16:32, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Cassette tape
[edit]I remember a cassette from the mid 80s which I think was a dramatic reading of the Yars' Revenge mini comic book. It wasn't available for very long, and was probably promotional. I don't think it was ever packaged with the game, though it may have been packaged with a book. Is this familiar to anyone else? It would be interesting to add this info to the article. CyborgTosser
I found it. I will add the info to the article. CyborgTosser
Gameplay
[edit]Seems to me there are some gameplay features not mentioned here. I specifically remember that at higher levels, instant swirl shots would be introduced, and the neutral zone disappeared. I'm not sure that the 2600 at my parents house is still functional, and highly doubt I could obtain such levels of Yar prowess nowadays. Anyone else? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.69.12.130 (talk) 16:34, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
- This is true, it does get more difficult with increasing speed and a disappearing neutral zone.--KJRehberg (talk) 19:40, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
- The difficulty of the swirl is affected purely by your score. The difficulty of the missile is affected by the number of levels cleared. After enough are cleared, you will get a set of two levels with no neutral zone. Then it will return, but for two less levels then it was there before. This repeats until you end up with a cycle of 2 levels with neutral zone, and two without. With this in mind.. EAT EVERY CELL. You get more points for eating all cells (169 point a pop) then for even destroying a swirl. When the shield is blue or pink the swirl fires 3 times as often, and sometimes instantly. when the shield is grey or pink, it starts changing direction to hit you. It can't reverse completely, and cannot aim right at all, but can otherwise change directions as many times as needed. It changes direction when it gets to where you were when it fired, and sets the next direction change point then.198.153.92.254 (talk) 05:20, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

Best selling
[edit]At the beginning of the article it is written that the game is "Yars' Revenge was Atari's best-selling original title for the 2600". What exactly does that mean? Alancarv (talk) 01:35, 10 October 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alancarv (talk • contribs) 01:24, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Alancarv: "Your original" means you originated the work at hand. Not licensed from elsewhere, not a remake, not a clone, not a port. It's an original game made at Atari. So, maybe Pac Man, made at Atari, had even more sales, but it was licensed from elsewhere and isn't their original property. — Smuckola(talk) 03:27, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Smuckola: Thanks for clarifying. Alancarv (talk) 02:39, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
C64 Fangame
[edit]@Postitguy: - None of the sources added regarding Goshawk demonstrate notability - forum posts and the UVlist entry are unreliable as they are WP:USERGENERATED. The game's itchio page is not an independent source showing notability. WP:MOSVG states that it "is usually inappropriate to mention or list homebrews and fan remakes of games". Gaming news doesn't seem to have covered the game and I was unable to find anything showing it's notable. Waxworker (talk) 16:17, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- atariage is the premier forum that even the original yars developer posted on. there is no other. you have problem braindead moron. Postitguy (talk) 21:03, 4 September 2023 (UTC)

- @Zxcvbnm: - Pinging Zxcvbnm for their input, as they previously removed mention of Goshawk. Waxworker (talk) 22:40, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
- It's simple - Wikipedia policy states that forums are user-generated and inadmissible as sources. Goshawk should not be listed here, period, unless it was mentioned in an actual reliable source, of which I can find none of note. The unofficial sequel you made up one day is not a proper topic for Wikipedia to discuss, and insults will not make things better. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 22:52, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Yars' Revenge: First War
[edit]From what I can tell the Facebook game Yars' Revenge: First War is no longer available though I don't know when it stopped being offered. As such I believe that the line "and still offering new innovative content." is a little misleading. I belive a better way of saying this would be:
"This arcade social game has been acclaimed for remaining faithful to the original concept, while also offering new and innovative content. Yars' Revenge: First War is no longer available to play on Facebook." AneurynPlays (talk) 20:52, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Re-write
[edit]I've given the game a real work over trying to cover its development, legacy, reception and plot and others. If anything important has been lost (i.e: Tilt review, will try to re-apply once I can get it translated), I'll gladly re-add it. Otherwise, I hope people dig the changes. Lead
[edit]-Does AllGame need italics?
- Probably not. AllMusic, the sister site, does not use it. I think italics on websites is used for websites that were described as online magazines. AllMusic and AllGame were databases. Unless there is some naming convention for website rule I'm missing. I realize it is italicized in the review infobox, but I may take that up over there. They might know what is up. Andrzejbanas (talk) 11:57, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- If AllMusic doesn't use it, it should be fine. Has one ever considered Magneton? Pokelego999 (talk) 15:24, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
-Why these three sources specifically? Wouldn't it be more concise just to say "retrospective critical reviews have been more positive" or something similar?
- Might be a personal thing, but I if I don't feel like I can capture a source that says the overall reception or have a wide variety of publications saying this, I feel it is not accurate to say retrospective reviews were positive. I chose these three as they showed a variety of retrospective eras, authors, and location (US and UK) to give a more variety of reviews from different areas/sources. Andrzejbanas (talk) 11:57, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- I have a different style of editing personally, but that's fair enough. Shouldn't be an issue then. Has one ever considered Magneton? Pokelego999 (talk) 15:23, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
Plot
[edit]-The plot is a bit confusing since I don't know if the Yars are protagonists or antagonists here. It should be clarified if this backstory is in the game itself or not as well, given a lot of this info tends to be in manuals and the like from this time period.
- I'll add that this is the backstory. I'm more from a WP:FILM background, so I try to follow MOS:FILMCAST, which states ". If roles are described outside of the plot summary, keep such descriptions concise. Subjective interpretation using labels such as protagonist, antagonist, villain, or main character, should be avoided. The plot summary should convey such roles." I've tried to clarify some things, but as a narrative, it does say they peacefully populate planets. I think that should give you the vibe they aren't the villains in a story. Andrzejbanas (talk) 11:57, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's totally fair in terms of abject descriptions. The new description suffices well for emphasizing both of their roles in the story. Should be good to go. Has one ever considered Magneton? Pokelego999 (talk) 15:26, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
Gameplay
[edit]-"and cannot operate fire commands when within it." I'd reword to "cannot fire their weapon within it" for clarity.
-I'm a bit confused how this whole "cell" system works. They are apparently part of the shield, but then also act as items you can "eat"? Does eating just mean hovering over it? Clarify this a bit.
- Tried to clarify a bit. I think in the backstory it says they grow the power to eat basically anything and i'll expand on this that they can eat the energy shield. This is why I sometimes include gifs of gameplay in gold games, it can be really confusing to understand some bits and bobs. Andrzejbanas (talk) 11:57, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
Development
[edit]-Looks good
Promotion and release
[edit]-Looks good
Reception
[edit]-"on the comics book inclusion," re-word to "comic book's"
-What is "Video Games?" It's a pretty generic name, so I'd clarify what it is. A magazine? A book? A newspaper column?
- Clarified as a mazazine. Good call. Andrzejbanas (talk) 11:57, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
-"that would grate on people's nerves" I would just change this to either "get on people's nerves" or "grate people's ears" or something similar
- Re-phrased. Andrzejbanas (talk) 11:57, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
