Inclusion criteria

[edit]

I am a bit confused about what should and should not be included in this List. I came here from a link at List of poetry anthologies. I see many of the books in this list are ones that I would consider to be anthologies. My assumption is that a "poetry collection" would be a collection of poems from a single author. gK 04:00, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Yes, this is the older page, and a few of the collections are anthologies - you could rationalise that if you want. Charles Matthews 05:52, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Since you seem to have entered most of the info, I'll let you have the fun of correcting it -- except that the Manyoshu has already been added to the List of poetry anthologies. ;-) I'm currently working on adding info on Japanese poetry and Japanese poets to various lists that are currently rather English-language-centric on the Wikipedia. There are still more important Japanese anthologies to add to the List of poetry anthologies, but there may be a few collections from Japanese poets that I will add here. gK 06:44, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Useless

[edit]

This list is almost completely useless as an encyclopedic reference. the list is woefully inadequate, and is a target for self promotion from at least one poet who is not as notable as the majority here. This should be, after 6 years without comments, either fixed or deleted.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 05:51, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Revision: MAY2013 and ongoing - Inclusion Criteria

[edit]

I've been working on this article for the last few weeks, and will continue to do so. It is a work in progress, and the only goal is to revise this article to make it an encyclopaedic list.--ColonelHenry (talk) 14:50, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Entry format

[edit]
For English-language collections
  • Name of collection (year of publication) - (poet's name)
For non English-language collections
  • Name of collection in its original language (trans. translated name in English) (year of publication) - (poet's name)

Inclusion criteria

[edit]
  • The book must be a discrete published collection of poems, and not a compilation of a poet's collected works/collected poems/selected poems
  • The book must be by a single poet--or by two poets if the works were a collaboration (i.e. Wordsworth and Coleridge's Lyrical Ballads).
  • No anthologies.
  • Must not be a single poem (i.e. Tennyson's In Memoriam A.H.H.).
  • Will not include poetry books that are self-published, solely ebooks, or vanity published, unless they are historically notable works (i.e. Whitman's Leaves of Grass)
  • While anyone can see T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets is far more notable and influential in modern literature than, by comparison, Patti Smith's Auguries of Innocence (apologies, Mr. Blake), someone in the industry saw fit to publish the latter. It is not our role to judge quality, just to list it if it meets the criteria herewith and the appropriate MOS guidelines on notability.

Splitting proposal

[edit]

I propose that this article's introduction section, which tells readers what a poetry collection is, be split from this page to form a separate page called Poetry collection (currently a redirect page). The content of this introduction section, as a definition of what a poetry collection is, merits being turned into a main article to which this list article would be a sub-article. I suggest that that "Poetry collection" article also cite sources written by poets, such as this one or this one by Holly Lyn Walrath and this one by Ada Limón, among others.
