United Nations Draft Charter
[edit]Why isn't there more information about Mary McLeod Bethune helping draft the charter of the United Nations? As a crucial point in international politics after World War II, I believe there should be at least subheading within the general article, as well as links to more information. 2601:589:8401:C980:641B:2229:C35E:348F (talk) 19:23, 22 January 2024 (UTC)
GA concerns
[edit]After reviewing this article, I am concerned that it does not meet the good article criteria anymore. Some of my concerns are listed below:
- The lede, at five paragraphs, has become bloated
- There is a lot of uncited prose.
- Can any of the sources listed in the "Further reading" section be used in the article?
Is anyone willing to fix up this article? If not, it may be nominated for WP:GAR. Z1720 (talk) 23:09, 27 June 2024 (UTC)

This article contains a 5-paragraph bloated lede, numerous uncited sentences and paragraphs, and short, one sentence paragraphs in a very long "Legacy and honours" section. Z1720 (talk) 04:17, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- I agree that this article has lots of deficiencies. -- Melchior2006 (talk) 07:27, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- The article has seen a flurry of activity since this GAR was opened. Could you provide additional feedback following recent edits? ZsinjTalk 11:39, 14 July 2024 (UTC)
- I plan to keep working on this article to address the issues raised. Other editors are active and making improvements. I welcome further feedback, review, or support at the article. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 15:32, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

- Hi Firefangledfeathers, we are around three weeks away from this GAR being three months old, which is normally when we start looking towards a close (we try not to let them go on indefinitely). There still seems to be extensive issues with the article. Do you believe that it is salvageable? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 21:25, 22 September 2024 (UTC)
- Will update soon. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:10, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- AirshipJungleman29 and Z1720. I don't have it in me to continue, and I don't think anyone else is taking this on. This is ready for closure. In addition to the issues Z1720 mentions above, there are many poor sources of the "over-simplified picture book for children" variety, despite the availability of many great books and journal articles. There's a gap in her biography of her work with women's clubs, with a commented out section ready to go if someone can improve the sourcing. too many block quotes
[edit]The article has lots of very short block quotes which don't really justify the jarred format that results. I would ask help in integrating the short blocks into less disruptive in-line quotes. -- Melchior2006 (talk) 12:34, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
- I think you're right. Looks like we're at 7 block quotes right now, and I'd expect maybe two or three in an article this size. Will work on it (eventually). Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:57, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
1.50
[edit]Melchior2006, I'm seeing the bit about Bethune using $1.50 in initial capital to start the Daytona school in most sources I'm gathering. Could you tell me more about why you removed it? Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:57, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- My problem is not with the sourcing, but with notability of the assertion itself. What does it mean to "start" a school with $1.50? Does that mean that everyone was working for free or that there was no money for the heating bills, or that there were no building costs? Of course it sounds romantic to mention this paltry amount, but what does it really mean? -- Melchior2006 (talk) 19:14, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- Good questions. I'll keep an eye out for better explanations. I do think I'll eventually push for inclusion. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 22:10, 18 July 2024 (UTC)
- It sounds romantic, but it's not really helpful. It basically means that she had no funding. Are you sure it wasn't $1.56? Doesn't sound as good, does it? These are the stories we like to tell... -- Melchior2006 (talk) 08:01, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
